4 pounds = visible results?

A couple of weeks ago I signed up for SparkPeople, a free social networking website dedicated to health and fitness.  I’d been tracking my food, water and exercise.  I’d been making sure to do cardio and weights and yoga, and making healthier food choices whenever possible.  On Wednesday I weighed myself and found that I’d lost 4 pounds.  Not bad, right?

Well, on one of my walks around the block at work, just after I’d signed up for SparkPeople, one of the patrons saw me and made a comment.  “Hey Librarian!  Enjoy your walk, but don’t lose too much weight – I love a lush woman!”  He looked vaguely familiar, but I couldn’t pick him out of a crowd if I needed to… but he obviously recognized me.  I just waved and kept walking.

On Saturday I was handing out tickets to Martin Yan’s cooking demonstration when the same guy came up to my table.  He smiled and said “Keep walking, you’re looking great!  What’s it been, about 5 pounds?”  I smiled and said “Just about.”

I’m not sure if the guy was hitting on me, being a creepster, trying to be supportive, or just being friendly.  But I wonder if any of you have seen visible results just by losing 4 pounds?  The only thing I notice is that my rings spin around a lot more, but other than that I don’t see anything.  What do you think?

Exercise in Jeans

Admittedly, exercising in jeans isn’t the best idea in the world… but here’s the thing: I knew that if I had to change clothes I wouldn’t exercise.  Sometimes that one little thing is all that stands in the way of me and meeting that daily exercise goal.  Rather than let the fact that I was wearing inappropriate workout attire stop me, I just jumped on the treadmill and got to it.

I knew that walking on the treadmill non-stop for 30 minutes would bore me out of my mind today.  I thought I’d spice things up by walking for 5 minutes at a time and then stopping to do some form of resistance training or stretching.  So here’s how it worked:

  • 5 minute walk, 1.5 minute stretch
  • 5 minute walk, 100 bicep curls with 2.5 lbs
  • 5 minute walk, 30 reverse flys, 30 shoulder presses, 30 lawn mower things, 10 bicep curls (all with 2.5 lbs)
  • 5 minute walk, 30 chest presses, 30 flys, 10 crunches (all with 2.5 lbs)
  • 5 minute walk, 30 right side bends, 30 left side bends, 30 crunches (all with 2.5 lbs), 20 leg lifts
  • 5 minute walk, 30 leg circles towards the front (each leg), 30 leg circles towards the back (each leg), 40 calf raises
  • 5 minute walk, 1.5 minute stretch

I ended up working out for about an hour, and the constant change-ups kept me from getting bored.  Some muscle groups feel more worked than others but it was good to get up and move.  The only downside is that my jeans began to stick to me because I was sweating so much.  Oh well, better to exercise in jeans than not exercise at all, right?

Late Afternoon Workout

I meant to workout this morning, but I ran out of time before I was supposed to meet up with my sister.  Then I went to visit mom before I came home to sit like a lump and watch Biggest Loser on Hulu.  But I was restless.  I brought the laptop into the kitchen, sat it on a chair and watched BL while I did dishes.  Still dissatisfied I went back to sitting before I realized that watching the competitors sweat so hard was reminding me that I hadn’t exercised yet so I got up and got to it.

I haven’t been following C25K for awhile now.  Mostly because I’m lazy that way.  So today, I set the treadmill to a 1% incline, warmed up for 5 minutes at 3.5mph and then jogged as long as I could before I had to walk again.  I went for 6 minutes the first time, 4 minutes the second time, 2 minutes twice more, 1 minute and then I speed walked for the last 3 minutes.  I was super excited about the first 6 minute jog – it’s the longest I’ve gone since high school!  Then I was progressively more disappointed.  To make up for it, I speed walked, but it’s not the same, ya know?

Either way in 30 minutes 27 seconds, I went 2.09 miles.  Not bad – it’s a faster pace than I’ve done so far!

When I finished with that, I did a little bit of resistance training.  I’m super sore from the past 2 days of workouts, so I tried to focus on the muscles that weren’t as sore.

  • 30 bicep curls with 2.5 lbs each arm
  • 30 squats with 5.0 lbs
  • 30 kick backs, each leg
  • 30 calf raises
  • 30 girl push-ups

I stretched and now it’s time to rinse off the dried sweat.

I feel good.  The movement definitely helped loosen up the sore muscles.  I sweated a lot so I know I burned some calories.  All I have to do is find a healthy dinner so that I don’t undo all the hard work I just did!

Decent Start to My Day

I was up pretty late last night.  So, like any idiot, I decided to get up at 6am for exercise.  Yeah… didn’t work so well.  I did that thing where I get all dizzy and sweaty from waking up and getting up too fast.  When I was a kid it happened a lot more often than it does now.  I think it has something to do with lack of sleep and an increase in stress. There’s also probably a blood pressure issue too.  It took about 30 minutes to feel normal enough to exert myself.

Since I was dizzy earlier, I thought it was probably a good idea to avoid jogging.  I walked instead.  I set the incline to 2% and the speed to 3.5mph and went for it.  I ended up going 1.75 miles in 30 minutes.  Then I stretched and started some resistance training:

  • 30 shoulder presses
  • 30 reverse fly
  • 30 crunches with 2.5 lbs weight
  • 30 side thingies (each side)

The resistance training only took about 15 minutes, so I still have another 15 minutes of movement to work into my day.  Should be easy enough.

I feel good, this was a good start to my day.  Now it’s time to get ready for work, go to work, and then visit my mom tonight.  Unfortunately I have a lot to do and can’t miss another day.

So today is the day to restart my healthy life.

I jog/walked for 32 minutes and I went 2.15 miles.  The last time I did this, I was able to jog for 5 minutes at a time.  This time… only 2 minutes at a time.  I’m disappointed, but it makes sense.  If you don’t keep moving, it’s harder to do it, right?  So I cycled through 2 minute jogs and minute and a half walks.  I was covered in sweat, but it felt good.

When I finished, I stretched and got right into resistance training:

  • 30 girl push-ups
  • 30 reverse push-ups
  • 30 high kicks with each leg
  • 30 mule kicks with each leg
  • 30 side kicks with each leg
  • 30 calf raises
  • 30 squats

Then more stretching.  Hmmm… looking back it seems I missed ab work.  I’ll do that tomorrow – I need to get ready for date night now.

I feel good.  I am confident that I will lose the 20 pounds necessary to not be “overweight”.  It won’t be easy, but I can do it.

A Walk Around the Block

Due to various staff illnesses, injuries and days off yesterday, I was scheduled to be in the sorting room for 3 hours straight.  That much time in the room is exhausting and you really have to watch for repetitive stress injuries when you’re there so much.

One of my staff noticed that I’d been in the room for awhile and asked if I’d had dinner.  When I said no, she asked if I’d brought anything.  Well… no, but I brought some granola bars.  She ran out and grabbed some Chinese food – her treat!  So sweet!  I ate it in the room at the staff computer because it was slow.

Then an hour later she came back and asked if I’d had my 30 minute lunch break yet.  No, but that’s OK I’d been sitting a lot and it’d been quiet.  She kicked me out!  Told me to go!  When I protested she said “Don’t make me worry about you.  I’m going to pull the mom card.”  So I went for a walk since she’d been nice enough to bring me dinner earlier.

About half way around the block I looked towards the library and noticed 3 or 4 Sheriff’s cars with lights on.  I couldn’t tell if they were parked behind the drugstore or in front of the library, but I worried.  I worried even worse when I realized that I couldn’t take the shortcut path to get back quicker because it had been closed for construction.  I started by walking quicker, but the more I walked the more I worried until I started jogging.  I made it back to the library in no time only to discover that I worried for nothing.  The Sheriffs were at the drugstore.  I wasn’t out of breath or overly sweaty and the staff had no idea of my temporary worry/insanity.

It wasn’t until this morning that I realized that I jogged in public and wasn’t phased by it!  And that I jogged for a couple of minutes without looking like a wrung out rag!  Yay!

Today’s workout was the most challenging so far.  I started with the normal 5 minute warmup walk, followed by 90 seconds of jogging, 90 seconds of walking, 3 minutes of jogging and 3 minutes of walking.  I had to repeat the jogging/walking cycles once.

The 3 minute jogs were the worst.  My knees didn’t want to bend right, the music on my playlist wasn’t working for me, and I could feel myself sweating.  I hate to sweat when I can feel myself sweating.  It’s odd, I know, but sweating when I’m running around and playing is one thing, sweating when I don’t have anything else to distract myself is another thing altogether.

Either way, I did finish the workout.  No wussing out for me on this one.  I ended up going 1.5 miles during my 23 minute workout.  Not bad for someone who could hardly walk around the block a couple years ago!

Yesterday I had to work, so I didn’t have much time to do any exercising.  Plus, my head hurt (I missed lunch) and could hardly see well enough to cook a decent meal.  DH took me out for sushi instead.  I’ll just freeze some of the chicken or not make the tuna casserole on Friday to makeup for the missed cooking last night.  I did a quick workout with weights after dinner.

Breakfast this morning was a quick parfait thingie: nonfat strawberry yogurt topped with a handful of mini shredded wheat, a few almonds and a banana.  It’s an easy breakfast to make and delicious to eat.  I usually make it with raisins instead of a banana, but I need to eat this fruit before it all goes bad.  You don’t have to use strawberry yogurt; any flavor works, that’s just the flavor I had in my fridge.

Lovely Day

My BIL asked me to watch the kids and my mother so that he could take my sister out for date night tonight.  I agreed, negotiated with my younger brother to split the babysitting duties, and then planned the rests of my Saturday.

The video card went out on DH’s computer (oh no!), which made for a very sad husband.  We stopped by Fry’s Electronics to pick up a new one.  On the way back home we decided the weather was far too nice to be cooped up inside.  DH suggested a walk around Lake Victoria.  I agreed and steered us to Lake Elizabeth in Fremont (what can I say, I knew what he meant) where we had a nice walk.

There’s lots of construction going on down there with the new BART extension, so the walk was interesting.  Kids were playing in the parks, families were barbecuing and the geese were wandering around looking menacing.  The walk was about 2 miles on flat ground, which worked out well for my knee (tendinitis flareup) and my sore legs (exercised out of boredom yesterday).  It was nice.  Just when I started feeling like I was getting sunburned we were back at the truck and figuring out the next place to go.

Since it was lunch time, we drove to the mall and had sandwiches before we wandered around.  We stopped in at Target and picked up a few things for DH’s Halloween themed birthday party, and then came home.

It was a nice, relaxed morning and early afternoon.  Let’s hope that theme continues while I’m babysitting later on tonight. 🙂

Up a Hill

I walked up a hill today. Then I wandered around a park. Then I walked back down the hill. The whole thing took about 2 hours.

When I was walking around the park, I remember thinking that last year I would have been ready to go home a lot sooner. This time I was trying to justify staying out there later and battling mosquitos. In the end, fear of West Nile made me go home.

I think I’ll do it again in a couple weeks on my next Saturday off.

Here are a couple of pictures from a previous trip to Garin Park.
